This week in my life

Our County Fair begins on Wednesday of this week. Thursday is the big parade down Main Street (actually named First St., but everyone here calls it Main street). We sit outside at my brother-in-laws tavern and the kids catch the candy that is thrown to them. After the parade we head over to the City Park where the Fair is held. I of course have to work in the Fish Stand, which isn't too bad (only about 100 degrees in there), but I get to work with some of my high school friends from way back. We are not the county seat of our county, but we have always housed the fair because we are located in the center of the county. My town is Owensville, Missouri and it is a typical small rural Missourian town. My family and I have a blast, meeting up with friends and family that we haven't seen since last year's fair. This year we have the Charlie Daniels Band on Friday and Billy Currington on Saturday. We have the demolition derby on Thursday, which my oldest son will be participating in and my youngest daughter is sitting in the pit this year. Bull riding, truck and tractor pulls and motor cross are also highlights that we are looking forward to. And this is my life the week of July 26, 2010.

Do any of you have a County Fair? What is the best part of your Fair?

  1. I have not been to a Midwest county fair for years. This makes me nostalgic. When I was a kid, my brother used to show pigs at the fair. Sometimes he was in the barrel riding or other horse events. This was in Illinois.

Later in Springfield, MO, the Greene County Fair, hired high school kids for lots of the venues. My daughter worked the Pineapple Whip and Funnel Cake stand for several years.

I enjoyed the animals more than anything, especially the horses and horse events.
